Physical server backup

Solution architecture

Veeam Agent for Windows permit to backup Windows physical server or computer. You can install agent on :

  • Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 or later
  • Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 SP1 or later

With Windows agent you can create a Veeam Recovery Media and create entire system image backup. You can backup specific volume or individual folders. When you install Veeam agent for Windows, few components has deployed.

  • Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows Service: this service is responsible of perform all backup type and restoration. By default, this service is configured for start automatically.
  • Veeam Agent Tray: permit to monitor the status of your backup operation. He provive a quick access to main functions of Veeam agent (start backup/restore operation, …). He is starting when server/computer start and he runs on background.
  • Store configuration data: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 LocalDB Express is used for backup data.

Operation mode

The Veeam agent can operate in two mode. The Standalone mode operates as a standalone product. With this mode, agent is installed manually on the server or computer. It’s possible to use Veeam backup repository as a target location.

The Managed mode operates Under control from Veeam Backup & Replication. The deployment is performed remotely by Veeam Backup & Réplication. All operation (product deployment, data protection, disaster recovery, and administration tasks) has performed by Veeam Backup & Replication console.

System Requirements

Veeam agent for Windows requires few requirements.

  • 2 GB of RAM
  • 150 MB of free space on the disk for product installation.
  • 150 MB of free space on the disk for product installation.
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or higher.
  • Windows 7 SP1 or higher.

Application supported

If you want backup server, you need to verify that application installed has supported. Veeam agent support the following applications :

  • Microsoft Active Directory Domain Controllers installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or highter.
  • Exchange server 2010 SP1 or highter.
  • Sharepoint Server 2010 or highter.
  • SQL Server 2005 SP4 or highter
  • Oracle 11g et 12c installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or highter.

Port used by Veeam Agent for Windows

Veeam agent for Windows requires to open port. The list below describes the different port and protocol.

From Veeam backup server to Veeam Agent computer

  • TCP 6184 used for communication with the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows Service.
  • TCP 6160 and 11731, used for communication with the Veeam Installer Service.

From Veeam backup server to distribution Server

  • TCP/UDP 135, 137, 138, 139 and 445, for communication with the Veeam Installer Service.
  • TCP 49152-65535 (Windows server 2008 or highter), dynamic RPC port range.
  • TCP 9380, for communication with the Veeam Distribution Service.

From Distribution server to Veeam agent

  • TCP 49152-65535 (Windows server 2008 or highter), dynamic RPC port range.
  • TCP 135, for deploy Veeam agent.

From Veeam agent to Veeam Backup Server

  • TCP 10005, using in the managed mode for communicate with Veeam Backup server.

Create protection group

On the Veeam console, click on Inventory tab and click on Physical & Cloud Infrastructure.

On the central panel, click on Create protection group.

Enter the name and description and clik on Next.

The protection group can be populated with individual computers, Active Directory objects or computers from CSV. My server is join to Active Directory domain. Select option that you want and click on Next

Click on Change to select domain.

Enter the name of Domain controller and choose account. You can add account with Add button. Click on OK for validate configuration.

You can now selected objects, click on Add and select desired objects (root of domain, organizational unit, security groups, computer account).

Click on Next on the Exclusions Windows without change anything.Select account used for backup physical server/computer. You can add new account with Addbutton. Click Next for validate the choice.

Configure discovery and deployment option and click on Next to validate configuration. Validate other Windows and launch group creation.

Click on Finish, Agent discovery session has been started. After few minutes rescan is finished.

Add Group to Backup Job

When Protected group has been created, you can add this protected group on Backup job. On the Veeam Backup & Réplication console, select desired group and click on Add Job on the ribbon. On the menu, click on New job.

Select the type of computer (Server, Workstation or Failover cluster) and leave the default mode. Click on Next.

Enter the name of the job and description.

Verify computer on Computers windows and select backup mode that you want.

Select Backup repository and choose the number of restore point that you want

Configure Guest Processing Windows and Schedule the job. In my case i choose to launch manually the job, so i not configure Schedule Windows. Click on Apply

Backup job is now been configured. if you have scheduled the job, this job start automatically.
